The "Fairy Bell" at Aymestry, Herefordshire

The "Fairy Bell" at Aymestry, Herefordshire

The  church bell at Aymestry was similarly linked to evil spirits, though here it is the bell itself that is said to have the power to defeat them. The bell was until fairly recent times rung at sunset. The reason usually given for this was that the sound of the sacred bell was enough to keep the little people tied to the nearby Pokehouse Wood, a place of evil reputation.

In fact it seems more likely that the bell was a curfew bell that continued to be rung long after most curfews ended. In any case the little people have not been reported to have been seen recently, bell or no bell.
